Wolfson students take non-traditional field trip

Nestled in the shady area on the far side of Sawgrass’ course is a lone concessions tent with a sign proclaiming “Open to the Public.” The refreshment stand is off the beaten path, but has become a haven for fans because of it’s large white fans, it’s courtesy phone, and it’s shady, withdrawn location.

Behind the counter works a crew of Wolfson High School students and faculty. Kailyn Mead welcomed newcomers to the tent as she raised money for her softball team. The player worked with 3rd baseman Nandi Richardson. Both said they enjoyed working to help raise funds for equipment for their school’s team but complained about the large spiders and nagging mosquitoes that came with the tent’s remote location. Assistant Principal Mary Deangelis is one of the chaperones for the girls’ official school “field trip.” She says the TPC is a great opportunity to raise money and that the team has earned several thousand dollars throughout the years.

Besides the monetary benefits, volunteers get to work next to one of the most well-known sporting events in the Florida. Deborah Caccavale got to see her first game of golf. “It’s different from all other sports. It’s all quiet when you go to the ball; it’s the opposite of softball.” The students enjoyed themselves during the fundraiser; after all, what’s better than missing school to watch sports?
