Head of Security works to cover perimeters of Championship
Vic Micolucci

Security guard Jawaan Hutchinson shows no one is exempt from search as he checks Chairman of the Shuttles Jim Brungard.

Dan Sidders has a huge weight on his shoulders. He is the guy that oversees security at The Players. He sat in a trailer just off the grounds Friday, manning a radio monitoring all security operations at Sawgrass. Sidders, Senior Vice President of Special Events for CSC, maintains the company has “a sufficient amount of staff to assure a safe and successful operation.”

The coordinator says his guards are prepared to handle a variety of situations, but if problems escalate, the police deputies on duty are quick to help.

Sidders says his operation’s biggest challenge is keeping all cell phones out of the TPC. “Everybody has cell phones nowadays and to catch them all is a hard to chore. We do our best to keep as many out as possible.”

The security manager warns cellular smugglers that if the guards find a phone, the guests are required to take it back to their cars. For the vast majority of golf fans, that’s a very long way.
